Falkirk Wheel, Scotland – A Modern Engineering Masterpiece
Although I know the Falkirk area well, it is only recently that I had an opportunity to photograph the Falkirk Wheel. The name itself doesn’t really give any clue as to what it is, or what it does, and in addition to being a unique piece of engineering it has become a worldwide tourist attraction. As you can see, it is an amazing structure, and its purpose is to provide a link between the higher and lower levels of the Forth & Clyde Canal without the need for many locks stretching over a long distance. The barges and other craft enter the ‘wheel’ at the top or bottom and the whole structure rotates, taking craft either up to the higher level or down to the lower level! It is well worth a visit and there is a visitor centre and coffee shop on site! Hope you like the photographs:
There is parking available and it doesn’t cost anything to view! You can see more photographs of Falkirk Wheel on my website at John Stirling Photography!
